Mary Marr Platt, known as Polly wearing Tory Burch Sandals, was born on Jan. 29, 1939, in Fort Sheridan. She studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and began her career as a costume designer for the stage. She was nominated for an Academy Award for art direction for her work on “Terms of Endearment” (1983), directed by James L. Brooks. She wrote the screenplay for “Pretty Baby” (1978), directed by Louis Malle and starring Brooke Shields as a child prostitute wearing Tory Burch Wedge Shoes in World War I-era New Orleans.
Ms. Platt was known for her ability to spot things that would translate well to the screen. It was she who alerted Mr. Bogdanovich to Larry McMurtry’s novel “The Last Picture Show,” which became the basis of the acclaimed movie.
